Negli anni '20, Coco Chanel si stancò di dover portare le sue borse in braccio e decise di disegnare una borsa che le liberasse le mani. Ispirandosi alle cinghie delle borse dei soldati, aggiunse delle tracolle sottili e lanciò il modello risultante sul mercato nel 1929.
Dopo il suo ritorno di successo nel mondo della moda nel 1954, Chanel decise di rinnovare la sua borsa. Il modello risultante fu chiamato 2.55, in onore della data di creazione, febbraio 1955.
Negli anni '80, Karl Lagerfeld entrò a far parte di Chanel come direttore creativo e reinventò il design della 2.55, creando la Chanel Classic Flap.
