The Jackie bag is one of Gucci’s most iconic styles and continues to be a staple of the bag range since its first release in 1950. It was originally named the Constance. However in 1964 when America’s First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, bought six bags at one time, Gucci renamed it the ‘Jackie’ in her honour. The Gucci ‘Jackie’ is instantly recognisable for its rounded edges and piston closure. At times Gucci has released slight variations on the traditional ‘Jackie’, and the ‘Jackie Bardot’ is one such variation. The ‘Jackie Bardot’ allegedly references popular French actress Brigitte Bardot sensual curves. It differs from the traditional Gucci ‘Jackie’ Bag by having two handles and are now more scarce. The Gucci Brand has such respect for the ‘Jackie’ bag that when they opened the Gucci museum in Florence in 2011, a full collection of all the ‘Jackie’ bag styles since 1950 was selected as one of their main displays. As well as being super chic and functional, this bag is truly a piece of history.
Many people believe this iconic Gucci Jackie was designed by Tom Ford — and while it does come from his celebrated era at the house, the true creator of this early-2000s monogram style is John Dunford. Dunford, one of Gucci’s talented handbag designers, crafted this elegant twist on the classic Jackie. Knowing this insider detail adds an extra layer of history (and value!) to a bag that’s already a standout from Gucci’s golden years.
