Martin Margiela did not invent the Tabi, but he made them the most recognizable and desirable shoes among fashion insiders; the Tabi, from the term tambi, literally, layer of skin, separate the thumb from the rest of the foot and are the symbol of Maison Margiela, but also the most controversial shoes in the history of fashion. The goal of the Belgian designer, inspired by a trip to Japan, was to create invisible shoes to give the illusion of a bare foot.
